Transgender women cope with issues of marginalization and oppression based on gender identity (Ryan & Rivers, 2003). The purpose of this study is to explor the experiences of transgender women using the lens of successful aging. Using a qualitative inquiry approach, research questions were developed focusing on aspects of successful aging, such as physical, mental, and social engagement issues. Themes focusing on the transgender MTF (male to female) experience and successful aging will be discussed through the interview process. Gender is a social construct, yet policy focuses on men and women using a biological definiton. We find this problematic, as physical well-being, societal age-graded expectations, assisted living facilities are affected by this biological construction of sex rather than the knowledge of the social construction of gender. This biological construction negatively impacts the well-being and ultimately a transgender woman's ability to successfully age. Implications focusing on creating transgender-firendly inclusive policy will be described per interview resposne.
