After much ho-humming with the human subjects review board (HSRB) I received approval to interview folk 2 weeks ago. Since then 3 interviews have been completed. I need 2 more in order to reach my initial minimal goal. Still waiting on some folks to contact me and all that so that I can begin the thematic analysis and write up the paper. It's due one week from this Friday, March 18, if I am apply for the undergraduate research award. I'm not sure I'll make that deadline. However I was accepted to the OAGE conference (Ohio Assoc. of Gerontology Ed.) on April 8, 2005 and will be presented with Dr. Nancy Orel in a symposium style format. If anyone is interested in participating please feel free to post here or contact me.

I just received word that my abstract on "Transgender Women and Successful Aging" has been accepted to the Ohio Gerontology Association Education conference in April in Kent, Ohio. This was the goal. Now to conduct the research, write the paper, and present it to a room full of policy makers, directors, and academics in the field of gerontology. |

Greetings!
The purpose of this letter is to ask you to participate in a research study about the experience of transgender women. The purpose of the research study is to explore the experience of transgender individuals using the lens of successful aging. In other words, how does the impact of transgender identification impact the quality of life as a person ages? The intent is to document the life experiences of transgender women to inform the research literature with the ultimate goal to influence public policy regarding transgender individuals. The study is being conducted as part of an undergraduate research project at Bowling Green State University. The goal is to describe the successful aging experience of transgender women.
Participants in the research project will be interviewed either face-to-face or on the phone. The interview is estimated to last at least one hour. In some instances, the interview may last longer depending on the participant’s responses. The interview will be recorded in order to ensure accuracy in transcribing the interview responses. Confidentiality will be maintained at all times. Participants will be assigned a code number and only code numbers will be used in the transcription, data analysis, and data reporting. Participation is completely voluntary.
If you have any questions or comments about the study, you can contact me, Jeanette Beal. I can be contacted at 419-575-1053 or via email at jkbeal@bgnet.bgsu.edu or my faculty mentor, Laura Landry-Meyer at landrym@bgnet.bgsu.edu, or complete and mail the attached form in the envelope provided. Please note that e-mail is not 100% secure, so it is possible that someone intercepting your e-mail will gain knowledge of your interest in the study. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
